According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, food imports across the region could climb by a staggering 105% from US$25.8 billion in 2010 to US$53.1 billion in the next decade. Yet this is a conservative estimate given that the Gulf’s population is expected to surpass 50 million by 2020 and that tourist numbers are slated to double over the same period. All this before the recent inward investment spike, a plethora of new infrastructure investments and game changing scenarios such as Dubai’s bid to host the World Expo 2020.
